In fact, really I feel I owe it to my readers to give a mighty drum-roll and announce this Diva-scovery with fanfare!

Judith Miller (of the Miller Antique series fame) highlights Neeltje Twiss Antiques when she writes about The Hague saying , “This family-run business specializes in modern antiques. They also have furniture from the 18th C and earlier stylish objects d’art from the 1920’s.”
The first time I met Patricia Twiss in the shop Neeltje Twiss, she was artfully creating a display in the back room. As my friends and I wandered into her shop from a rainy day, she greeted us with a warm smile, “Get inside out from that rain!” She waved her arms around, indicating a few of the items in the store , “We’re rearranging the story today, but look what we’ve done in the back!” and with that she swept us into store to admire a gorgeous display. She greeted us with such warmth and personality that I knew I wanted to give this woman business – because The Antiques Diva’s first and foremost rule in shopping is to only support vendors I like! Of course, then I saw the inventory and was thrilled that she was so nice because her inventory was so gorgeous I might have had to break my rule otherwise!

Each time you visit, the inventory is rearranged in inventive ways with seasonal displays, unique pairings that excite the eye.
to 10px; WIDTH: 296px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center” alt=”” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kcTb8DnPVW4/S3Qh0HLuPKI/AAAAAAAAEOA/kko2JT1NnlQ/s400/neeltjetwiss12.jpg” border=”0″ />

The eponymously named shop takes on the style of “THE” Neeltje Twiss, who travels, buying inventory that is downright divine. Sometimes these are simple pieces, other times they are pieces with shine. Regardless of the patina, we’re talking about pieces that would look perfect in almost any home – pieces that would be a focal point, causing everyone to pause and ask, “Wherever did you find that? It’s amazing!”
And if you’re like me, you’ll roll out the drums and banners – and say with fanfare,
“I got it at Neeltje Twiss Art, Antiques & Interiors in The Hague!”
TEFAF 2010

See that guy over there – he’s a private buyer who just flew in on his private jet. Of course, unless you are a polyglot, you might find eavesdropping on the rich and famous to be a bit difficult. You’re as likely to hear English spoken as you are Russian, Chinese, Aarbic, French, Portugese, German, Dutch or Italian. It’s as if you’ve taken the worlds wealthiest citizens, thrown them in a Baccarat martini shaker and added copious quantities of cologne, silk ascots, and mink. The cocktail comes out tasting a tad Fitzgeraldesque, but with price tags included.
to 10px; WIDTH: 332px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center” alt=”” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kcTb8DnPVW4/S1yKPelNj6I/AAAAAAAAEGQ/Vk-kBENNhpw/s400/3361286914_d8c56b9c07.jpg” border=”0″ />It’s this latter reason that I send you to the show. When you go to a museum you can’t touch the art, you don’t get to see the reverse of the painting and you certainly don’t hear how much money a Monet costs. But at TEFAF, you can do all these things. Entrance for 2 into TEFAF costs more than I spent on the pair of brass turn-of-the-century-Polish candlesticks I bought at a flea market in Gdansk which grace my table, but the cost is worth it. At 55E per person (it does include the stupendous fair catalog – eye candy itself) you might be wondering why I’m sending you there. Unless your budget is a whole lot bigger than mine you most likely won’t be doing any buying at the fair. Consider it a day out window shopping. But, oh honey, the window shopping is good. Down right Divalicious.
to 10px; WIDTH: 244px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center” alt=”” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_kcTb8DnPVW4/S1yKWpht8yI/AAAAAAAAEGY/sfX6SbdkVV0/s400/3361414460_7d3a5aa66f.jpg” border=”0″ />I always tell Diva Clients who are interested in learning about antiques to go to the museums. Study the art, study quality and then take that knowledge home with you and out to the flea market and apply it at prices that don’t rival the USA’s national deficit. This is why you go to TEFAF.
Just as TEFAF has vetting committees to guarantee the quality, authenticity and condition of the work (taking works of art that do not meet their high standards out of the dealers possession until the fair is over), I have a Diva Guarantee that will be the finest fine arts fair you’ll ever attend!

Amsterdam’s Best Kept Secret – Annette Brederode’s Open Door Days
top:2px;padding-right:5px;font-family:times;”>Over the past few years I’ve come to eagerly anticipate the arrival of postcards from Annette Brederode, announcing her twice-annual “Secret Sales” – known locally as “Open Door Days” in Amsterdam, where Annette literally throws open the doors to her private residence and lets you shop your heart out inside her living room. This is a woman with Style – and do note that is style with a capital “S”! She oozes good taste and then combines that flair with innovative and creative ideas, putting together eclectic finds and traditional French antiques in a manner that inspires! After a visit into her shop-in-her-home, you’ll want to go home yourself and redecorate. Apparently I’m not the only one who feels this way, for she (and her home) has been featured time and time again in Dutch decorating magazines! Her shop doesn’t have a store front and she doesn’t run a website or advertise. Instead her Secret Sales dates tend to be spread via word-of-mouth along with her twice-annual post-cards announcing the dates to former clients. This year’s post card (see image above) came with a note attached “No Old Shoes, Simply Antiques”, and the following explanation:
“Dear Diva,
This is my new invitation – I needed a break from my yearly beautiful cards picturing the things that I sell. This old shoe is over 100 years old. I found it in Italy and it symbolizes the beauty of things that we don’t throw away, but keep instead, until they themselves are antiques.
Warm Regards,
Annette.”

The sale takes place on the 3rd floor in an inconspicuous building. Ring the buzzer and climb the stairs for shopping paradise! When you’re finished here pop over to Johan de Feijters Secret Sale!
When?
Dec 11-13, 2009
Loving the concept of appreciating the beauty in all things, I knew I had to share her words with you in addition to sharing some pics I took recently while visiting Annette Brederode’s private shop with Diva Clients. Mark your calendars for Dec 11-13, 2009. Should you miss the sale dates, do note that you can book a private appointment to visit Annette’s home/shop at your convenience!

The Antiques Diva™
Najaarsexpositie in The Hague
top:2px;padding-right:5px;font-family:times;”>Just last weekend I wrote sharing details on one of my favorite vendors in The Hague, S van Leeuwen, and not so long before that I was divulging details on the oh-so-diva-worthy Rocks & Clocks. They recently teamed up Chez van Leeuwen for an Antiques Diva Tour of The Hague, sharing historical information and fascinating stories on their inventory and seriously regaling the ladies on the group Diva Tour. They’re back together again for what I’m certain will be a wonderfully good time (full of great buys) in S. van Leeuwen’s Najaarsexpositie Dec 3-13, 2009. You’ll want to add this date to your December To Do’s!
to 10px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center” alt=”” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kcTb8DnPVW4/SxPQ-A6piuI/AAAAAAAAD18/faEZPPcQKGQ/s400/s+van+leeuwen+expotie.jpg” border=”0″ />
to 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center” alt=”” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_kcTb8DnPVW4/SxPQ56mZAoI/AAAAAAAAD10/mvnK2qhyzA8/s400/rocksandclocks.jpg” border=”0″ />S. van Leeuwen specializes in antique Dutch furniture, Chinese & Delft porcelain as well as high quality silver work, while you’ll recall Rocks & Clocks specializes in classic and designer jewelry from 1900-1940.
Make sure to stop at S. van Leeuwen’s located at Noordeinde 164 on one of the following dates:
Dec 3 & 10, 5-9pm
Dec 4 & 11, 12-5pm
Dec 5, 12-4pm
Dec 12, 12-5pm
Dec 6-13, 12-5
to 10px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center” alt=”” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_kcTb8DnPVW4/SxPQ4jzclXI/AAAAAAAAD1U/2zXQCMh-2g4/s400/antes+art+form.jpg” border=”0″ />

Not only will S. van Leeuwen & Rocks & Clocks be offering special items just in time for Christmas, but they’ll be joined by their colleague from Antes Art Form, a specialist in French glassworks from the Art Deco and Art Nouveau period as well as Brigitta Sueters who makes jewelry inspired by the past!

Have I mentioned before in past Diva blog posts my weakness for vintage posters and signs? I’m downright bummed to miss his inventory in person as while this event is going on I’ll be doing La Diva Loca for a few days this December in New York City! My loss might be your gain as there’ll be more for you to buy if I’m not on the scene scooping up the goods before you!
to 10px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center” alt=”” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kcTb8DnPVW4/SxPQ-tihoLI/AAAAAAAAD2E/e0Rnv6BKsSo/s400/susanne+hats.jpg” border=”0″ />Last but not least, I think the dealers stepped on a stroke of genius when they decided to branch out beyond antiques by offering a little something extra – wearable art! Hat designer Suzanne Scheepers will be onboard showing her hand-made designs, making this event a perfect Diva’s Day Out!! I’m seriously bummed to miss it!!! You’ll just have to go on my behalf and, as always, tell them The Antiques Diva™ sent you!
Happy Shopping!!!

Last Minute Diva: Amsterdam Art Opening and “Must Buy” Book!
Dear Diva Readers,
top:2px;padding-right:5px;font-family:times;”>From time to time, I feel compelled to get off the antiques route and take in some additional European scenery. Today’s divergence is taking us down the “Fietspad”– that is, Dutch for “Bike Path”! I simply had to write today to tell you about a new book, Bicycle Mania, written by my good friend Shirley Agudo. And while bicycling might seem like a stretch for an antique shopping website to cover, it’s not as big of a leap in the imagination as you might imagine!
to 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center” alt=”” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kcTb8DnPVW4/Svvcxrm93RI/AAAAAAAADzs/QXRXLVr-4-8/s400/Antiques+Diva.jpg” border=”0″ />In addition to covering antiques, I often write about home décor and art galleries and that’s where Agudo comes in! Not only is Agudo a talented writer, but she is also a photographer with her art work appearing currently in an Amsterdam art gallery! From Nov 7-Dec 5 you can view Agudo’s current series at tographs/Contact.html” target=”_blank”>Eduard Planting’s Fine Art Photographs. Better yet, Meet the Artist this Saturday, November 14th from 4pm-6pm!

I’m looking so forward to the launch of Shirley Agudo’s book Bicycle Mania – I’ll be driving from Berlin into Amsterdam for the weekend to see this special art exhibit & to attend the Book Launch Party!
To whet your appetite, why don’t you tographs/Bicycle_Mania.html#2″ target=”_blank”>visit Eduard’s website to see a sensational selection of Agudos work (and while you’re there why don’t you check out what else is on in Eduard’s Gallery!?).
A publicity email I received with information on the book launch reads:
“The Dutch are bicycle crazy. Nowhere else in the world is bicycling so ingrained in the culture as it is in the Netherlands. Never before has anyone captured its essence quite like American photographer and author Shirley Agudo, a long-time resident of Holland.
Depicted in this enlightening and amusing book are young, old and even NAKED cyclists in a country with more bicycles than inhabitants, transporting ‘anything and everything’ on their bikes – from tables and mattresses to four or five children and the family dog.
Shirley and contributing photographers Trevor Waldron, Ben Deiman and Max Rubenacker take us along some of the 29,000 kilometers (18,000 miles) of bike paths and into the heart of Amsterdam and other Dutch cities to show us how pervasive, practical and incredible the Dutch cycling culture really is.
It’s all here – the history, the infrastructure, the mentality and the global reputation of a culture gone completely mad about bikes.”
Until Next Time, Happy Trails!

Winterexpositie Het Juweel 2009
het Slot Zeist, Zeist
Friday 27 -Sunday 29 November 2009
11am – 7pm
On an Antiques Diva Tour in The Hague recently, David shared a glimpse into his collection and I was utterly smitten – his collection runs the gamut of items for the Mr. or the Mrs. from vintage & antique watches, to purse clocks, to beautiful baubles from the Art Deco period and beyond! I’ve got my eye on a pair of Van Cleef and Arples cufflinks for my husband as a Christmas cadeaux and would be delighted if I could convince the hubster that I desperately need that platinum, gold, diamond & emerald 1920’s Dutch Art Deco ring Rocks & Clocks has in inventory! If you’re looking for a special present for someone else (or better yet, yourself) you must visit Winterexpositie Het Juweel 2009 this November and if you can’t make these dates, never fear: Rocks & Clocks is at present updating their website with a sensational collection of “Must-Have Diva-Worthy Accessories” – so stay tuned for details on their website launch: http://www.rocksandclocks.nl/

As she shared pictures from a recent project at The Hague’s own Paleis Hotel (and then gave us a glimpse of her own home on the pages of More than Classic magazine), I knew she was worthy of being crowned a Diva in her own right! This lady has serious diva style! She’s been offering interior decorating advice for more than 20 years, lending her expertise to country houses and personal residences, corporate settings such as banks and offices as well as hotels. Interestingly enough, during our conversation it was discovered that she’d done 2 Vecht-side homes near my former residence in a small village outside Amsterdam. Though I love Hetty’s signature style, something that rang loud and clear as I examined her portfolio was how each project she worked on had its own look and feel. Ms. van Moorsel-van der Lande explained this by saying that she listens to “both the client and the property, letting them guide her as inspiration in each and every project”

Diva-scovery: The Hague’s Cachot Antiek
top:2px;padding-right:5px;font-family:times;”>I want to introduce you to one of my favorite shops in The Netherlands – Cachot, a charming antique shop located in the heart of The Hague. Just around the corner from the main antiques drag in Den Haag – the Denneweg – Cachot is located on the Maliestraat in a historic Rijksmonument building dating back from 1670. A trip to the store is as much a treat for the treasures contained within the building as it is for a chance to delve deep into this landmark building. The proprietors Frans and Nellie Rovers have thought of everything, making this shop absolutely charming, decorating the store as if it’s the setting for a soon-to-be fete whilst stocking an inventory that has clients traveling into The Hague from far and away to see their diva-worthy collection.

And while their inventory runs the gamut from empire dishes to ostrich eggs, their specialty is antique French mirrors from the period 1850 – 1910. No matter when you visit Cachot, you’ll always find a plethora of antique mirrors in a variety of sizes and finishes from various periods.

Last Minute Diva! Dutch Old Masters at Sotheby’s Amsterdam & TEFAF 2010 Dates
Both oil on panel, each approx. 113.2 x 86.3 cm. Estimate €80,000 – 120,000.
Dear Diva Readers,
top:2px;padding-right:5px;font-family:times;”>With the May 5th Sotheby’s sale, here’s your chance to score an Old Master or at the very least examine one with the blue light. One of the things I love most about high-end antique sales is the opportunity to get up close and personal with museum pieces without the constraint of the museum security guard watching over my shoulder! I’m the girl you wonder about when you see her getting escorted out of the museum for pressing her face too close to a master-piece. I’ve been known to set off more than one security alarm over the years – most recently at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin when I was examining an 18th C painting done of the street in Berlin where I now live. In my defense, I come by it naturally – when my mom came to visit me in Paris she got us kicked out of the chateau in St Germain-en-Laye for opening a closed door to the dungeons. Like mother like daughter! That said, if you’re like me and want to see the reverse side of paintings, ask endless questions about the techniques used, it’s provenance, (who owned it/when) and learn the prices of museum-pieces, then you should definitely visit the May 5th, 2009 Old Master’s sale at Sotheby’s Amsterdam!
Raise your paddle for great landscapes, still-lifes, portraits, biblical and genre scenes by Dutch old masters from the 15th to 18th century. Given this is A’dam, the sale has a special focus on the Dutch Golden Age. One of the highlights is a stunning family portrait by the 17th century master Jan van Noordt which is remarkable for its quality, elegance, coloring and size. Also of particular interest (see image above) in the art community is a pair of portraits done by the Delft master Willem Willemsz van der Vliet, of the charming 17th C couple – Willem Reyersz. de Langue and his wife Maria Pijnaeker. Willem de Langue (1599-1656) was a notary in Delft who worked for several artists including Delft’s famous home-town boy Johannes Vermeer.
Should you not be able to make this Sotheby’s sale but are salivating over the thought of touching the masters, then plan ahead to attend TEFAF next year. TEFAF, The European Fine Arts Fair, is the crème de la crème of arts and antiques fairs – this is the best antiques show in the world. Here you rub shoulders with museum curators and jet setters (as well as mere mortals like me who can’t afford a master but love the opportunity to see their price tags). Next years TEFAF will be March 12 -21, 2010 – book your airfare and hotels now to insure you have a place to sleep! Beds book up early and airfares into Holland skyrocket this time of year! Tot Ziens,
