  • Bonjour Mary in Montmarte –

Next time you see Carol please tell her I said “Bonjour” and “We’ll always have Paris…”

The Marche St Pierre is the fabric district in Paris and where I scored the majority of my home linens/draperies/fabric! I believe it’s one of the best bargains in Paris and by far one of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon in the city of lights Something about all that Passemeterie and Tissue gets me excited to do home decorating projects and I always conceive my best ideas at the foot of Sacre Coeur walking past one fabric store then another!

I remember the day Carol is referring to as we walked through the fabric district. We were buying yards and yards and yards of a gorgeous apple green raw silk to make curtains for a community center room/music performance space just off the Rue de Rivoli. Though Carol is convinced trickery was involved in getting the grotesque discount at the store, I merely asked the owner of the fabric store if he was willing to throw in a few meters for free because we were buying so much fabric that day. While normally the answer might have been “I’ll give you an extra 1/2 metre,” on that day the vendor was feeling generous and fell victim to my batting eyelashes and threw in the rest of the fabric roll for free giving proof positive to my theory that it never hurts to ask for a discount. We didn’t know until we got the fabric to the community center just how much extra fabric he’d given us and then we had to wonder if the vendor had intended to be so generous!

By the way Mary, I’m so glad to hear you’ve connecting with the AWG (American Womens Group) and I encourage you to become a member if you haven’t already. You’ll love this club as much I did when I lived in Paris. It’s an excellent club and an excellent resource for making friends, learning to live in France, and to help you on your way towards becoming “Almost French”!

  • dear diva, thanks so much for the book recommendation. i went out and found the book you recommended for me on 1200 addresses in paris and i love it. it’s been a ghue help in findig places to buy things for my apartment. i never knew it would be so difficult decorating here. in the usa i knew where to go and what to buy, here its all foreign to me and you have saved me from decorating my apt with items from tati. lol! anyway, i just met some awg ladies and was telling them about ur site and one o f them knew u! carole says bonjour and it was so cool hearing them talk about your paris shopping conquests. carole said to ask you about the time you and she went to the marche st pierre and that she still doesnt know how you convinced the fabric vendor to give you 3 meters of fabric for free but she said she was amzaed to watch you work. diva, i hear you are as fun in person as on the blog. i just love the blog. are you coming to paris anytime soon? thanks mary
