Malmo Decorative Fair in Sweden

Dear Diva Readers,

Right now, open any top shelter magazine and you are guaranteed to see Swedish antiques strategically placed in beautifully appointed rooms. Our Swedish Guide Daniel Larsson is one of the leading antique dealers in Sweden with a gorgeous showroom and an international clientele. When Daniel contacted me to tell me that he was getting involved with the organization and promotion of the Malmo Decorative Antiques Fair I knew I needed to do some hands on research – so I booked myself on one of my own tours to shop the fair. And Mamma Mia (hey wait, aren’t these Abba folks Swedish?) was it divine!!! You have all the best of the Swedish dealers in one chic locale.

Naturally when shopping any antiques fair you don’t want to go when the mere mortals shop – you want advance access.  So we registered to attend trade day while the vendors are still unpacking their trucks and setting up their stalls.  This is not open to the public—which means we get FIRST DIBS on buying! We really got to see inventory at The Malmo Decorative Antiques Fair before it even opened! On day one we got a sneak peek at folk art, Swedish furniture, and decorative pieces that were of the highest quality as Malmo is the third largest antiques fair in Sweden with 80 dealers from all over the country – for those of you who are familiar with the Stockholm fair, rumor has it the Malmo Fair’s opening day revenue surpassed its big brother.

These vendors sell to the international trade and possess a vast knowledge of Swedish antiques. Imagine having access to pieces that you’d be sure to see on the covers of magazines soon! That’s what Sweden’s antiques scene has to offer.  The international buyers on scene shopping were actually limited – often I go to a trade fair in the south of France and I feel like the whole of Houston has ended up there on the same day.  Not so in Malmo – there were only a handful of foreign buyers – so if you’re looking for exclusivity, here’s your chance to buy before any of your competitors have seen the inventory.  And as few of these dealers have websites selling online you get incredible, unheard of access.

The fair was located at Katrinetorp Landeri which is a mansion adjacent to Malmo. Comprised of several buildings dating to the early 1800s, this historic property  is the ideal setting for an antiques fair! My UK Diva Agent Gail McLeod is an avid gardener, and since she joined us at Malmo, taking a bus-mans holiday with me, we were also able to explore the house and several gardens which include a gentry garden, utility garden and an orangery all of which are community managed.

Now the Malmo Fair is only once a year – next time you’ve got the chance to shop it is in the last weekend of August in 2016 (it’s held this same weekend every year – so mark your calendars darling).  But have no fear….  You DON’T HAVE to SHOP Sweden ONLY during the fair.  Did I mention we know all these vendors so you can shop them year round – visiting them in their personal homes and by-appointment-only stores, warehouses and boutiques – year round on one of our Antiques Diva Sweden Tours.  If you’d like more information on taking an Antiques Diva Sweden Tour, email us at to:info@antiquesdiva.com”>info@antiquesdiva.com. We’d love to plan the perfect buying trip for you!

Swedish Cupboards

Dear Diva Readers,

Whether a client doesn’t have time to take a trip to Europe or if they simply want to source a few pieces for a project, we act as the “man—or woman—on the ground” to help find exactly what our client needs. And like most shopaholics, we love a challenge. We recently had a client who is an interior designer in New York email us with a request. He was looking to source an antique Swedish cabinet for a project. His client had seen one she liked on an antiques website, but didn’t want to pay the exorbitant price. What attracted both of them to the cabinet was the patina and style. While they wanted something authentic that would retain its value, they also knew that they’d be utilizing the cabinet and would most likely need to adjust the interior.

As soon as I received this request, I knew that our Swedish Antiques Divo Guide Daniel would be the person to contact. Of course Daniel quickly responded with this email:

“Authentic examples of antique Swedish cupboards like this with original paintwork have become increasingly rare. Much of the Swedish furniture currently available on the “antique” market has been comprehensively rebuilt and restored,  often repainted in popular pale colours and sadly some of these created or “style” pieces are sold as period.

But we are in luck! I think i have found the perfect cabinet by reading your requests. I have found a fantastic Gustavian cabinet in excellent condition retaining it’s original paint (gray/blue). This piece has never been over painted and scraped which ads to its desirability, rarity and value. The Gustavian expressions are evident in the small tapered feet, restrained carved details and well-balanced proportions. The price is 1/4 of the cabinet your client first saw.  This piece is a very good investment in my opinion as the market prizes original paintwork when talking about Swedish painted furniture.”

While I often say that the power of the internet is amazing and makes our job so efficient, you have to remember that computers are not people. Simply typing in a product that you want may pull up an item on your screen, but how can you be sure that you’re getting the best value or price? That’s where we come in time and time again by acting as our clients’ man on the ground and putting the word out to all our sources. Within no time, in this instance, we were able to find exactly what the client wanted at a quarter of the price (that’s including our commission, by the way). With the right people, the internet can truly be a great tool!

AYG Award Party in London

Dear Diva Readers,

top: 5px; float: left; color: white; background: #781300; border: 1px solid darkkhaki; font-size: 60px; line-height: 50px; padding-top: 1px; padding-right: 5px; font-family: times;”>Everyone knows that The Antiques Diva® loves a good party. But couple that with an entire party devoted to the world of antiques – filled with the movers and shakers of the antiques world – and I am in my element! I, along with my UK Antiques Diva Agent Gail McLeod and our behind the scenes Creative Guy Andrew Skipper, were recently in London to attend an evening to celebrate the Antiques Heavy Artillery Mentors of Antiques Young Guns at Olympia International Art & Antiques Fair. The party, which was held in the Club Room, was sponsored not only by The Antiques Diva® & Co but also more importantly by BADA, LAPADA, and, of course, Olympia International Art & Antiques Fair.

Attending the party was a myriad of antiques trade professionals and journalists. We spent the evening mixing and mingling, champagne in hand of course! When it was time for the awards ceremony, I was so pleased to present the award for Most Innovative Mentor to my friend and renowned antiques dealer, Spencer Swaffer. He gave space in his own store for a pop-up shop to his mentoree Paul Jones during the busiest week of the year.  The overall winner of the Heavy Artillery Mentor Program went to Robert Young who could not attend the party, so it was accepted by the Young Gun whom he mentored which happens to be our very own Swedish Divo Guide, Daniel Larsson.

Following the reception, everyone gathered at a fabulous new restaurant at Vauxhall called Counter. As well as being a well-known expert on the BBC Antiques Roadshow, Mark is also one of the co-founders of Antiques Young Guns along with Gail McLeod and George Johnson. Drinks, dinner, and lots of conversation ensued until the wee hours of the morning. A Diva’s work is never done!

Huge congratulations to Gail Mcleod who worked tirelessly to put this evening together, all while taking VIP clients on tour during the same week as this monumental event in the antiques industry. They say that if you want something done, ask a busy person… well, Gail certainly knows how to get things done! Looking forward to seeing Antiques Young Guns grow in the coming year and can’t wait for the next party!

On Friday July 4th, The Rooftop Restaurant at Alfies Antiques Market in London was the place to be! The much anticipated awards ceremony for the Antiques Young Guns took place and I was delighted to be in attendance.  The Antiques Diva & Co has strong representation in this esteemed group of young people involved in the antiques trade. Two of our Diva Guides, Alys Dobbie of NanaDobbie and Daniel Larsson of D Larsson Interior, are members along with our Creative Consultant Andrew Skipper.  And, most importantly, our English Antiques Diva Agent who leads our tours in the UK, Gail McLeod, is one of the founding members of Antiques Young Guns along with Mark Hill and George Johnson!

There were eight winners of a showcase at the prestigious Lorfords@Babdown kindly donated by Toby Lorford and Lesley Ferguson, owners of Lorfords Antiques and one of these winners was our very own Antiques Diva London Guide Alys Dobbie! It was also announced that eleven entrants will be mentored by renowned antiques experts and dealers.  We are so excited that our Swedish Guide Daniel Larsson will be mentored by Robert Young! (Alas Daniel was busy leading a VIP client on a Diva Tour in Sweden so he missed the event – here I am on stage accepting the award in his place).

If you recall, earlier this year, I announced on the blog my favorite dealers at The Bath Decorative Antiques Fair.  Well one of my top picks, James Gooch owner of Doe and Hope, was presented the prestigious award of Antiques Young Gun of the Year 2014 by winner in 2013 Timothy Medhurst. I have to tell you, I really think James is “one to watch!”  He has an amazing eye and will be shaping the way we decorate in the future.

All in all it was a fabulous evening celebrating the next wave of antiques enthusiasts. A highlight of the evening was meeting Steven Moore from the Antiques Roadshow (a twitter friend turned Real Life friend).  From dealers to journalists to auctioneers, these young people are changing the world of antiques for the better!

Rock on Antiques Young Guns!

Antique Young Guns

Dear Diva Readers,

top: 5px; float: left; color: white; background: #781300; border: 1px solid darkkhaki; font-size: 60px; line-height: 50px; padding-top: 1px; padding-right: 5px; font-family: times;”>Many people picture the “antique world” as a slow-moving menagerie of gray haired dealers, whiling away the hours in dark shops, just waiting for the odd customer to stroll in. While this scenario can certainly be found, there is also a new breed of antiques dealer and these entrepreneurs are taking over the antiques scene in Europe! There is a group called “Antiques Young Guns” comprised of career driven people under the age of 40 who make their living as antique dealers, working in auction houses, learning how to be restorers, and organizing regional and international fairs.

Antiques Diva, The Antiques Diva,

The Antiques Diva & Co is happy to be associated with this group as 3 of our Diva Guides are members of the Antiques Young Guns!  Alys Dobbie is our newest Guide, offering customized tours in London (including the world famous Portobello Market) and Brighton.  Our Swedish Guide Daniel Larsson is also a member of the group.  Daniel’s knowledge of Swedish & Gustavian antiques is amazing, and his connections in his native country of Sweden are invaluable to our clients when they want to find the perfect pieces while also learning about their history.

Young Gun, Antiques Young Guns, The Antiques Diva

One of the founders of Antiques Young Guns is Gail McLeod.  The Antiques Diva & Co is lucky to have Gail as our Diva Agent in the UK, as she is extremely well-connected and possesses a vast knowledge of antiques and sources. She is also the founder of National Antiques Week as well as the editor for Antiques Are Green.

young guns, The Antiques Diva

Gail, alongside other founding members George Johnson of Lady Kentmores (whom we’ve tapped to start leading our Scotland tours later this year) and Mark Hill have developed a website where young people working or wanting to work in the antiques industry can become members, allowing them to connect with other antique aficionados , sharing information, tips and contacts, and interactive links to shops allowing them to buy the hottest and best antiques from Young Guns.  While the members are currently British based – they are recruiting for American members! Be the first Americans to join the Young Guns!

Antiques Diva, The Antiques Diva

The whole concept of Antiques Young Guns is really exciting because it is solidifying the future of our industry.  By bringing these young minds together, the synergy that is being created is a powerful force!  This is definitely a group that I will be watching with much anticipation to see what they come up with next.   If you want to know What’s New in Antiques… you’ve got it – the Antique Young Guns are bringing antiques into the next millennium!

What do you like about your job?
Diversity & the friendships you make along the way with new clients 🙂

What do you consider your specialty in helping clients? What do you enjoy about helping clients?
My specialty is helping clients find the right price points.  I enjoy helping client gets better pieces then they thought they could.

Where did you grow up? Where do you live now?
I have been traveling around the world quite a bit before I got married and had a kid 🙂 I have lived in The USA, England, India, Norway, Spain & Holland.  I have now returned to my town of Helsingborg, Sweden and it is from here we lead our tours in Southern Sweden.  Next year I’m excited to say we’ll be offering Antiques Diva & Co antique buying tours to the cruises coming into harbor in Helsingborg!

What do you do when you’re not working? Hobbies? Interests?
I work all the time 🙂 but when I do take some time off I try to Kitesurf as much as possible 🙂

Favorite spot to vacation?
What’s vacation?!! My next vacation I will actually go this month to one of Europe’s longest beaches.   It’s in Poland and the beach borders Germany.  I hope to get many hours on the water 🙂

Do you have a favorite museum or work of art that inspires you?
My favorite museum must be Lousiana in Denmark.   Amazing place.

In the area where you lead your tours is there a special place you like to go? Perhaps it’s an area of town or a favorite cafe to drink your coffee?
If there is time I like to have a coffee at Koppi  – It’s considered the best cafe in Sweden

What do you think is the hardest thing for clients on tour? What do you recommend to help the client with this problem?
It’s a hardcore day shopping – with seeing a lot of inventory and making lots of purchases.  Sometimes clients can’t remember everything they saw or  they miss certain important pieces or even misunderstand prices.  I try to remind people what they’ve seen and liked, what they may want to go back and purchase – or even remind them of their earlier purchases in the week if a multi-day tour.  I also always try to help with calculating the currency.

Give me 5 words that describe your personality.
Committed, Driven, Nice, Honest & Charming 🙂
