As the days get shorter and cooler, we spend more time at home and that means it’s time to add those warm touches that make your rooms comfy and cozy! And what makes a room more comforting than nostalgic antiques?
Create a sense of warmth by layering antiques into your rooms. What do I mean by this? Add antique rugs—thick wool rugs that keep warmth under toe are ideal. Or why not layer a few rugs—think sheep skin or reindeer hides placed on top of oriental rugs or worn persian rugs. And don’t be afraid of a bit of wear… rugs that are threadbare in a few spots can be charming! We’re talking perfectly imperfect is charming!
Now is also the time to bring out the bric-a-brac that you’ve packed away during the summer when flowers from the garden are filling the coffee table . A bare coffee table can play host to a stack of books topped by a small sculpture and a beautiful bowl filled with potpourri. When you’re at the flea markets, look for items with lots of texture— i.e. small wooden boxes perfect for hiding clutter like remote controls, marble bookends, leather bound books, pretty dishes and small paintings to prop on easels.
Think about creature comforts as well. Having a nice tea set is always a good idea whether you’re enjoying a hot cup of tea while curled up in your favorite reading chair or sharing tea time with a friend.
No matter how you choose to warm your home up this fall season, layering antiques into your decor is a sure-fire way to create a cozy atmosphere that will have you and your loved ones spending quality time in the most important place—home sweet home.
